Vick left on the outside looking in
As much as I had written about Marcus Vick and his falling draft stock, I have to admit that I was surprised to see the former Virginia Tech quarterback go undrafted this weekend.
I had it in the back of my mind that Vick - who led the Hokies to an 11-2 record while completing 61.2 percent of his passes for 2,393 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushing for another 380 yards and six touchdowns in his only season a starter - would be attractive to somebody as the draft wound down on Sunday.
I said this last year - and I still believe it - that Vick is much further along as a quarterback than his older brother, Michael, who has struggled for the better part of five seasons as the player who's supposed to redefine the job of quarterback in the NFL.
That said, nobody wants a QB who is a head case - and you have to wonder about MV2 in that department.
He was given a second chance by Virginia Tech after getting in trouble with the law as a freshman - and seemed to be on track to making the most of things until the infamous Gator Bowl stomp that was witnessed by a national-television audience that led to his dismissal from the football program and the school.
He then followed that up by brandishing a gun or a cell phone or something else at a group of teen-agers in a fast-food parking lot - which wasn't exactly the wisest of moves for a talent already skating on ice so thin that it more closely resembled hot water.
To say that Vick is down to his last strike after this past weekend's draft would be to put it mildly. It's 11-0 in the bottom of the ninth, nobody's on base, and there are two outs and an 0-2 count.
What is the prodigiously talented Marcus Vick going to do next?
